  • Is LaunchBar compatible with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard?
Yes, the latest version of LaunchBar 4 runs fine on Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. An update addressing a few minor issues will be released shortly.
  • Is LaunchBar compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger?
Yes, LaunchBar 4 is compatible with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger.
  • How do I install LaunchBar?
    1. Download: Download the compressed LaunchBar disk image file from the Download page.
    2. Mount: Wait until the download has completed. If the downloaded file isn't opened automatically, locate it in Finder, then double click it to uncompress and mount the disk image manually.
    3. Quit: If a previous version of LaunchBar is currently running, quit it.
    4. Install: When the disk image mounts, a new Finder window will open that contains the icon for the LaunchBar application. Simply drag this icon to your Applications folder (or wherever you would like to keep it) to install. This copies the application from the virtual disk image onto your hard disk so the application is there for you to use whenever you like.
    5. Eject: Once LaunchBar is installed you can safely eject the virtual disk that it came on and also move the the .dmg and .dmg.gz or .dmg.bz2 files from your desktop to the trash. Double-click the LaunchBar icon in the location you installed it in order to begin using the application.
  • How do I uninstall LaunchBar?

    Short answer:

    Move it to the Trash.

    Long answer:

    1. If LaunchBar is currently running, quit it.
    2. Delete the LaunchBar application file (wherever you’ve installed it, usually in your Applications folder)
    3. Optionally, delete the preferences file, which is located at
      ~/Library/Preferences/at.obdev.LaunchBar4.plist
(the ~ tilde sign refers to your home folder)
    4. Optionally, delete LaunchBar’s application support folder (containing the configuration and other LaunchBar related files). This folder is located at
      ~/Library/Application Support/LaunchBar 4
    5. Optionally, delete LaunchBar’s cache folder which is located at
      ~/Library/Caches/LaunchBar
    6. If you have added LaunchBar to your “Login Items” in System Preferences in order to get it started automatically at login, you may wish to remove this entry as well.

Note that these steps will work for most other Mac OS X apps as well, as long as they use the standard locations for storing app specific data. Some apps store their files in Library/<app-name> instead of Library/Application Support/<app-name>, which isn’t recommended by Apple, though.

It would help us to improve our product, if you could tell us why you decided not to use it anymore. Thanks in advance!

General Questions

  • Where’s the documentation?
The LaunchBar documentation is accessible from LaunchBar’s Help menu.
    Open LaunchBar Help
  • How can I get LaunchBar to start automatically at login?

Just add LaunchBar to your “Login Items” in the Accounts preference pane of System Preferences to get it started automatically at login.

Alternatively, click and hold LaunchBar’s Dock icon and select “Open at Login” from the popup menu.

Note: On Mac OS X 10.3 the Accounts preference pane section is labeled “Startup Items” instead of “Login Items”.
  • Can LaunchBar be run without a Dock icon?
It is possible, but not recommended. See the LaunchBar Help, chapter “Tips & Tricks” for details.
  • Can LaunchBar index my email messages?

LaunchBar does not index mail messages (neither Mail.app nor Entourage). LaunchBar’s abbreviation search wouldn’t work satisfying for that task. It’s designed to find items by their name (by entering short abbreviations of that name), but this technique is not well suited to perform content searches such as searching in mail messages or within documents.

You may however use LaunchBar’s “Search in Spotlight” feature. Here you can enter e.g. “email launchbar” to search for mail messages regarding LaunchBar.

Troubleshooting

  • LaunchBar switches to Calculator when I type a digit
To avoid this from happening you can turn off the “Switch to Calculator when typing a digit (0-9)” option in LaunchBar Preferences > General.
  • I have encountered a bug!
First of all, please make sure that you are running the latest version of LaunchBar. Maybe your problem has already been fixed. Alternatively, have a look at our nightly builds page to check if your issue has already been addressed in the latest development build. If your problem hasn't been resolved yet, please send your bug report using the Email form. Thanks!
  • LaunchBar hangs!
If you are encountering a hanging issue (the program is still running but doesn’t respond to your input), please open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor, select the LaunchBar process, press Command-Option-S to take a “Sample” of this process and send us the results using the Email form. Thanks!
  • LaunchBar crashed!

If LaunchBar quits unexpectedly, please check if there’s a crash log file at

    ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/LaunchBar.crash.log

(the ~ tilde sign refers to your home folder) and send us that file using the Email form, so we can look further into this issue.

If you are running Mac OS X 10.2 make sure that you’ve turned on Crash Reporting Applications > Utilities > Console. Open the Crashes pane in Console preferences and select the “Enable crash reporting” option.
